Prius demand off 50%

As predicted by my former colleagues at the US Dept of Justice, Prius demand is way down, due to falling gas prices.
Toyota sold 2,174 Camry Hybrids last month, ... . The only two Toyota models to see an uptick last month were the Sequoia and Lexus LX 570, which are two gigantic SUVs.

  1. To what data is the new data compared? With the current economic and credit situations I would think that the metrics they are using to compare would be a little skewed if it was compared to last months sales. However this is very interesting and is a perfectly logical effect of gas prices. What happens when the government forces GM to produce prius-esk cars and gas prices stay down? Are they going to bail them out again?

  2. If you read the article, it is compared to November sales of the previous year. Hybrids are only a viable product if gas prices are high enough to justify the premium price for such a small, no-frills car.

  3. I agree about your statement but comparing data from this November to last November is not a valid comparison. You can only get accurate comparisons if all other conditions are the same and gas prices are the only variable that has changed. However it is only logical that gas prices are going to dictate vehicles sold based on its gas consumption.

  4. I was one of those people who bought a Sequioa last month. Prices were still low and gas dropped almost immediately after the purchase!!!

  5. The article also fails to mention price. Consumers are concerned with total cost of ownership. Purchase incentives may have been great enough to overcome gas prices.
