Spot the unintended consequence: Puerto Rico's Iguana solution
The Island has been overrun by the big lizards. Their solution is to export the meat. If this creates new demand for the reptiles, no telling how many we will have by next year.
I predict that the new plan will both increase the total iguana population in Puerto Rico and solve the island's iguana problem.
It seems to me that the problem isn't quantity, it's location. Iguanas at airports and power plants cause problems, but in a contained farming scenario, they might make be a profitable business without disrupting island life (or the ecology).
In the United States, carp and opossum might confound us, but we don't have any problems with catfish or chicken.
Then again, I'm a new student to economics. What might I be missing?
