Unequal pay for women: rational choice or discrimination?

NY Times gets it half right.   A student summarizes the article:

...women disproportionately choose careers based on factors other than income and they have unique challenges when they do seek more lucrative careers.

  1. This begs the question of whether women seek out less lucrative positions or whether professions become less lucrative once there are more women in the profession. For example, in Israel where women make up the majority of physicians, it is a far less lucrative, but no less demanding, profession as in the US. Similarly, in the US, as doctoral psychology has become increasingly populated by females, relative reimbursement rates have declined. Just another variable to consider….
