How much has US income inequality really grown?
It depends on whose numbers you use. Piketty, Saez and Zucman find the top 1%’s after-tax share rose from 9% to 15% since 1960. Auten and Splinter, working from the same tax data, find it barely moved, from 8% to 9%. The two series only part ways after the 1986 tax reform changed how high earners reported income, which is why critics argue much of the “surge” is a measurement artifact.
