It may have taken awhile, but there are public/private partnerships that are positively effecting the redevelopment of public housing and moving toward the model where those who live in public housing are fully integrated with those in private homes. The City of Alexandria, VA is a great example of replacing worn down public dwelling units one for one and moving them to be integrated into the neighborhoods of the City instead of isolating them into a section of town. Urban neighborhoods are being revitalized to create integrated mixed-income housing that doesn’t look like public housing, thus moving away from the old ineffective model and increasing the care for which public housing is maintained.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Caitlin's comment above. Attached is a link to a story about the mixed income building where I lived in New Orleans for the past 3 years. It's shows how a private company can use government subsidies to provide a real solution to the public housing dilemma.
